Frequently Asked Questions

Does Lakeland Internet have a right to be on my property?

In areas where fiber-optic infrastructure is being installed, Lakeland Internet has been approved and granted an easement and legal right-of-way to access private property. This permission is obtained in advance through a permit issued by the local government specifically for the construction of fiber-optic networks. As a result, we kindly request property owners to inform us about any underground hazards or concerns they may have, ensuring that appropriate measures are taken to address them.

What does “Easement” or “Right of Way” Mean?

The local government has the lawful authority to access specific portions of your property to maintain municipal utilities. Service providers, including Lakeland Internet, obtain permission to utilize these designated areas through easements. Easements are permanent restrictions placed on the property, which can transfer ownership if the property is sold. By acquiring an easement, we are granted the right to use the land for specific purposes, without any claim of ownership of it.

A right-of-way is a particular type of easement that bestows the user with the privilege to pass through a piece of land. It is primarily established to create public pathways such as roads, bridges, canals, and in the context of this discussion, public utilities like fiber-optic internet.

How long should the flags be left in my yard?

It is essential to keep markers and paint in place until the construction is completed. Construction crews depend on these markers to accurately identify the locations of important existing services within the easements. Removing these markers can lead to significant issues, potentially causing damage to existing utilities such as water, gas, and electricity. Therefore, it is crucial to preserve the markers to avoid any unintended disruptions or accidents during the construction process. This location and marking DOES NOT include electric pet fences or sprinkler/yard irrigation systems. The RESIDENT should mark these with utility flags, pink paint, or wooden stakes.

Yard Restoration?

Our construction teams are committed to minimizing any impact on your property during the fiber-optic internet installation process. Once the construction work is completed in front of your home and weather conditions allow, our team will undertake the necessary steps to restore the affected areas. We will have a clean up day once a week, with a large cleanup when construction is completed. The standard restoration process includes the following measures to revive your property where digging or plowing has occurred and where hand holes or vaults were installed:

  1. Adding soil to ensure the ground is leveled
  2. Seeding the area to promote the growth of new grass
  3. Applying a layer of straw
  4. Installing a composable mesh to secure the seed and straw in place
  5. We kindly ask that you water the restored areas on your property regularly for the next few weeks. Each home that will need restoration will have a restoration flyer left by the restoration crews with more details steps.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding your yard or the specific area impacted by the fiber-optic internet construction in front of your home, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Do you have sprinklers, dog fence or sump pump?

To ensure that your sprinkler system, dog fence, sump pump, or any other underground items are not affected during the construction process, it is crucial that you inform us about them in advance. This allows us to take necessary precautions and avoid any potential damage. You can mark these items using landscaping flags or landscape-safe pink paint.

To provide this information or address any concerns, you can either fill out the Personal Location Form available here or contact us directly at (260) 624-2013.

Construction Overview.
  1. Permitting Process
Before installing our fiber-optic cables, we must obtain approval from the relevant state or local agencies responsible for overseeing construction activities within their jurisdiction. This includes obtaining permits for areas such as state highways, county easements, cities, railroads, and other applicable locations. The permit approval duration varies depending on the complexity of the project and the presence of existing utilities, ranging from a few days to several months.
  2. Underground Installation
The underground stage involves laying conduits in the ground once the permits are secured and the final fiber-optic paths are determined. Two common methods used for this process are plowing and directional boring. Additionally, fiber-optic hand holes are installed during this phase to allow technicians access to the backbone for circuit installations.
  3. Fiber-Optic Cable Pulling
Following the completion of the underground work, the fiber-optic pulling team installs the fiber-optic backbone within the conduits or aerial (on poles), leaving sufficient slack for future servicing. This process can be accomplished manually by pulling the cable using a string or through an advanced method using a blowing machine that utilizes a feeding system to propel the cable.
  4. Backbone Completion
Once all physical construction stages are finished, our network engineers proceed with installing various types of electronics to facilitate data transmission and service provision to customers over the newly installed fiber-optic infrastructure. It’s important to note that “completion” refers to preparing the backbone fiber-optic for customer access, but it does not indicate that the fiber-optic is operational.
  5. Customer Installation
Upon the successful completion of the backbone installation, our fiber-optic installation technicians are prepared to connect the fiber-optic service to your home or business, enabling you to enjoy the benefits of high-speed Lakeland internet access.
  6. Customer Installation
Upon the successful completion of the backbone installation, our fiber-optic installation technicians are prepared to connect the fiber-optic service to your home or business, enabling you to enjoy the benefits of high-speed Lakeland internet access.
